KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!
Exercise your rights when confronted by law enforcement
- Casual conversation: Ask politely, “Am I free to go?”
If yes, calmly leave.
- Detention: Answer no questions if detained. Politely state: “I chose to remain silent and would like to see a lawyer.”
- Arrest: Immediately tell the police: “I choose to remain silent and would like to see a lawyer.”
- BEWARE of ‘casual’ conversation! Police will try to trick you into revealing incriminating details.
- DON’T consent to a search. If the police ask to look in your bag, home, or car, say “I do not consent to a search.” If they ask you why not respond: “I believe in my constitutional right to privacy and do not consent to a search.”
- NEVER physically resist the police. If they persist, stand aside and repeat, “I choose to remain silent and would like to see a lawyer.”
DON’T BE A TARGET!
- Travel safely. Never drive while medicated.
- Be a good neighbor. Loud music or community disrespect can lead law enforcement to your home
- Be discreet. Do not consume medical cannabis in plain view or in view of minors.
